La Nave – The Valley

Atardecer-en-el-valle

I apologize to you my grandchild because I fear my writings will not be complete to the very detail, but many things happened and most of them are not worthy of telling. At least they have no relevance as to explain you why you are here alone with only me to hold you.

Back in the day, we lived by a small valley with a silver river crossing it right through the middle. Meadows surrounded the river’s bank crooked course, an oak forest sprouted to the south, plantations grew smoothly to the east, rocky waterfalls burst forth to the west and our hacienda lay calmly to the north. It was her choice to live there but many years of doing things my way were not good and proved me to be wrong about life and its goals. She could have told me this before, but she was wise enough to wait for me to find it out on my own, and she was more than happy when the time finally came. Everything happened upon the brink of obtaining my first head of research position, when I stumbled upon my long forgotten book. This time the reading gave me the clues to unravel my general dissatisfactions. I decided then to pursue a quieter life for a while, before devoting myself completely to the finding of the philosopher’s stone through my research.

The little house in the valley we had talked about for years was bought at last and behind were left the worries of the city. The workbench substituted by the reading and the writing, her paperwork gave way to the beautiful dance of her paintbrush, the endless street jams exchanged for perpetual lovemaking, the barking of our hounds finally intertwined with the laugh of our newly born children and there, like a lightning, happiness was drawn into our home. We breathed the fresh air during morning walks, with your dad and your aunt by our side, and enjoyed the bliss of contemplating the natural scenery during the afternoons. Sunrise with freshly ground coffee and sunset with delightfully mixed hot chocolate and marshmallows was our life and our blessing. We endulged ourselves like we never had or would ever again. Of course, criticism was not spared by relatives and friends but passed by like leaves on the powerful river of our spotless minds.
